It's been five years since their previous release, 'Imperator', but the Norwegian Black Metal Angels Of Death, Dødsengel, are back with full length number four, 'Interequinox', and it's a stunner, quite an achievement given how much of a hard album to follow, or even match, the two disc two-and-a-half hour monster it's predecessor is. Nonetheless I think they have done it.

Like all its predecessors it follows in the uniquely eclectic, and very theatrical style of Black Metal which has an almost psychedelic edge, particularly the tracks 'Palindrome' which has a 70s throwback psychedelic meets Black Metal feel and the hauntingly bleak 'Rubedo', but where this is album is better is in its compact quality. 'Imperator' was possibly a little too long and maybe a tad protracted while 'Interequinox' certainly has sharper focus. It's still wonderfully esoteric and engaging, just more honed and direct.

One of the noteworthy points is Kark's excellent vocal range, harsh and clean, low and high, adding a wonderfully dark and deranged edge to the tracks, in particular 'Emerald Earth', 'Gloria In Excelsis Deo' and 'Panphage', matched by his guitar work and unique approach to both riffing and melody across the release which is both mesmerising and bewitching.

Also you can't overlook Malach Adonai's drum work which needs to equally out of the ordinary to sit well alongside the guitar work. The overall result is quite beautiful, not a word you naturally associate with Black Metal but here it feels appropriate.
