hellfest 2012
Bach at the moon...

Day two of the festival and the Metal gets underway at 10.30am with Suicidal Angels waking up Main Stage 2, but it was Crashdiet who made sure I headed into the arena early. After the traditional festival shower of wet wipes and dry shampoo, we made the short journey into the arena to see how these Swedish glamsters were going to rid the crowd of their hangovers.

And a fine job they did too. Frontman Simon Cruz was full of energy and even those who were more accustomed to harder Metal seemed to enjoy the set. Simon found common ground by saying "the good thing about being up this early is you can drink all day" and I think he made a few friends with that statement. I can confirm that I spotted him several times throughout the day and he kept true to his word, and watching him lift his bright blue mohawk so he could drink from his Hellfest jug was a fine sight indeed.

Next up was Gama Bomb who played Main Stage 2 and even though Crashdiet had pulled a decent sized crowd, it started to grow noticeably through the Irish thrash Metallers set. They had a great rapport with the audience, including a giant ninja wasp that flew around the crowd for the whole set and then buzzed off at the end. A great sing-along for 'OCP' with the crowd shouting out "Dick Jones" loud and clear and wall of death for 'Mussolini Mosh' were highlights and a way to make sure this won't be the last time I go and see these guys.

Time for a quick trip to the VIP bar for the traditional breakfast of ice cold Jaegermeister and then it was time for Steel Panther. Even though these guys haven't been around for that long, I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen them and was getting a little bored with the same old show. But today's set was very different as they had bothered learning some French for the occasion, including "show your pussy" and "boobies", all written as an aide memoir on Satchel's hand. They played a classic Steel Panther set with their obligatory appeal for girls to show their boobs. French ladies clearly have higher morals, as only a few got them out for the boys, in stark contrast to the hordes that did at Download.

Next up was my only venture into one of the four tents over the weekend to see October File play The Warzone. That has to be the most appropriate name for a tent as it was surrounded by its very own moat of mud. I'm not a fan of Metalcore, but these guys didn't do too bad a job and it's good to support your fellow countrymen, right?

As we wandered back to the main arena to grab some sustenance, liquid of course, we caught the end of a band I'd not heard of before, but their back catalogue is now firmly planted on my wish list. Koritni are an Australian band that play France a lot looking at their tour history, so it's no surprise that they got a good slot on the Saturday of Hellfest. It was the perfect afternoon band supplying a brand of Hard Rock that would make any Aerosmith, Van Halen or AC/DC fan smile. Keep an eye out for these guys, as they are well worth seeing live.

Uriah Heep were up next, but I opted to go and do a little bit of work and chill out in the press area. Glad I did, as I spotted a guy in the corner drawing official Hellfest posters. That's the thing that I love about this festival, the mix of music and art. The sculptures on site are amazing, and there are flames coming out of bars and other installations on site. I found out that the posters were limited edition and I managed to bag myself #1 of 70 for a mere €30. I did hear the traditional end to Uriah Heep's set, 'Land Of Hope And Glory' blasting out from the Main Stage PA, which made me proud to be British, then the guilt set in for not seeing them play, in favour of supporting French art – oh the irony.

And then it was time to return to the sleaze as I stood waiting for Sebastian Bach. Fresh from his controversial visit to the UK, he took to the main stage at Hellfest to an adoring crowd, waiting to get the vocal chords slashed as they tried to mirror his range, which happened instantly as he opened with 'Slave To The Grind'. His stage act hasn't changed at all and as he simultaneously head banged and swung his microphone over his head, the crowd were really getting into it.

After 'Kicking And Screaming' he had a good chat with the crowd in French. No idea what he said, but it seemed to go down well, so much so that one girl threw her bra onto stage, hitting one of the photographers. They passed it up to him and he grabbed it and took it off stage. 'Piece Of Me' was a great track to showcase his vocal talent, '18 And Life' was a perfect sing-along in the sun and renaming 'American Metal Head' to 'Français Metal Head' was a nice touch. The set was perfect and left me praying that the rumours of a Skid Row union will come true soon.

A little bit of a break to wander the site, grab some of the delicious food, and have a cheeky break in the VIP bar and next up for me were Machine Head who had the task of warming up the Hellfest crowd before tonight's headliners. This was by far the biggest crowd I'd seen Main Stage 2 pull over the weekend, bordering on ridiculous with the bar and stalls crammed in on one side, and wasn't the nicest of experiences to be honest.

I moved back slightly just in time for the Bay Area Metallers open with 'I Am Hell' – a very apt track for this festival. 'Imperium' and 'Beautiful Mourning' went down well, and then a green haze appeared and an echoey Rob Flynn broke the intense moshing with a monologue. When he said: "This next song is a metaphor for a person who comes into your life and has a similar effect. Hellfest do you know somebody like that?" it didn't get as big a reaction as they expected. Maybe a French translation would have been good, but as 'Locust' kicked in, it returned to savage moshing.

I've seen Machine Head a lot and have never questioned Rob Flynn's vocals but he didn't seem on form today, which was a real shame as the set list was superb, but thankfully ending with 'Halo' and 'Davidian' was a way to make sure I left satisfied regardless.

I retreated to the VIP bar to meet up with everyone and start taking bets on when Axl would actually turn up tonight. We got ourselves a drink and settled in for the inevitable wait, but then we were all taken aback as 'Chinese Democracy' blasted out at 11.30pm – the exact time he was billed. And we weren't the only ones, as the queue to get out of the bar was huge, and when we did eventually get out you could see people running over from all over site and we just about made it out for the end of 'Welcome To The Jungle'.

This isn't Guns n' Roses and I refuse to go and see Axl And Friends on tour, but you can't deny that it's the perfect way to spend a Saturday night after a few drinks. 'It's So Easy', 'Mr Brownstone,' 'Rocket Queen', 'Civil War', 'Nightrain' and 'You Could Be Mine', coupled with the overplayed 'Paradise City' and 'Sweet Child Of Mine', were all guaranteed to get your dancing shoes on. But it was 'Estranged' that sent shivers down my spine, as I absolutely love that song and Axl And Friends really pulled it off perfectly.

You may have seen the dig on the Metal Hammer website this week, that Axl took a tumble in 'Sweet Child Of Mine' and he certainly did, but unlike previous shows he didn't let it affect the performance, which went on for over two hours and left the whole arena in a fine party spirit. What a great end to a perfect day.

And here's the French version, with thanks to Flo Cherry...

HELLFEST 2012- 2nd JOUR: LE SOLEIL EST VENU

"Imperion" et "Deuil Beautiful" tombèrent bien aussi, puis une brume verte apparue, et dans un écho, Rob Flynn cassa l intense Mosh en court, avec un monologue, annonçant la prochaine chanson, je cite: " this next song is a métaphore for a person who comes in your life and as a similar effect, Hellfest do you know somebody like that?"

"It's so easy", "Mr brownstone", "Rocket Queen", "Civil War", "Nightrain" et "You could be mine", couplés aver les surestimés "Paradise City" et "Sweet child o'mine", étaient la garantie d' obtenir chaussures a son pieds.
