An album launch night for the 'Well 'Eavy... Volume 1' compilation album featuring new bands who rightly know that real Heavy Metal is made by bands who proudly wear smelly patched denim 'n leather, bullet belts, unkept hair and have a love for beer.

The upstairs of the Black Heart pub in Camden is like stepping into Dr Who's Tardis this evening and traveling back to the late seventies when vinyl was king and Metal was a swear word to the general public who then only trusted men in suits.

Flying over especially from Norway were a band with the brave monicker of Flight. Not the easiest band to find any info on when trying to Google their name, not that it matters one iota to these Norse Gods of real Metal who'd rather be stuck back in a time when you had to make a phone call in a piss ridden red phone box to make connection.

The Marshall amps were placed upon beer crates creating even more authenticity and Flight looked the part especially with the guitarist in a plain looking red vintage Judas Priest t-shirt.

The delivery was simple and concise, music that made the head bang that doesn't bang; this wasn't childish mosh pit music, just good ole fashioned fist raising Metal.

Flight

Most songs had more than one riff with neat time changes. 'Escape', the song featured on 'Well 'Eavy' was a little harder and faster than the rest of their material . A safe landing from Flight on their debut UK show.

During the changeover it was rather refreshing seeing the venue fill up with so many like minded Metal fans who were far too young to remember the NWOBHM explosion the first time round.

Only some things have changed as my friend rightly pointed out, in that "Back in the old days at Heavy Metal discos like the Bandwagon, the only women who attended these events were boilers who headbanged together in lines of three to only bands such as Whitesnake or Magnum and from behind their backsides looked like three parked up London buses."

Tonight was full of young eye pleasing beautiful ladies in Rainbow and Saxon shirts. If only it was like that back in our day ! My friend shall remain nameless in case the feminist movement will want to castrate him with an original Sledgehammer 7" vinyl.

I've known the Amulet guys since they were only allowed in pubs at dinner time with a coke and a bag of crisps to keep them entertained. So it gives me great pleasure to see the band mature with complete moustaches and a record deal with Century Media who next month will be releasing their first album called... er... 'The First'.

A passionate group of guys who love any Metal that was originally made for vinyl. Highly influenced by those golden NWOBHM days, Amulet are reliving the dream with a little tongue in cheek just like the original bands did back in the day, unafraid of a little parody.

Opening with the imaginative daredevil titled 'Evil Cathedral' Amulet were in yer face with little Jamie Elton making himself seen above the packed heads with the clever use of a raised platform by the monitors. Elton's voice has improved immensely since when I first saw them a few years back although he's still more in the league of Jess Cox than Rob Halford.

'Sign Of The High Priest' has a huge chugging riff and 'The Hangman' sees a stage extra complete with black hood and rope, although sadly there were no Alice Cooper style props to make it sensational viewing.

An entertaining set, although they've still got a long way to go to if they want to surpass Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. However Amulet have already accomplished what they've set out to do and that is to emulate their heroes, bands such as Witchfynde, Crucifixion and Grim Reaper.

I would proudly stitch an Amulet patch onto my denim jacket.
