30th August 2014

Having a handy local music venue with cheap bar prices can most definitely pay it's dividends.

Before this evening I didn't know very much about the Brighton four piece Reckless Ambition except for they played youthful energetic rock that would appeal more to readers of Kerrang! rather than Classic Rock.

However it's a Saturday night and although I could have gone to see Karma To Burn at the Underworld, it was the trusty Merton Manor Club for me with those good folk who put on the Rock Patch gigs and who can argue with the barman when you get change from a tenner for a round of drinks... Hic... Burp!

Having arrived a little late after watching Chelsea give Everton a good thumping, support act Dirty Lions were almost finished, but I was most impressed with Parisian vocalist Michelle Gimenez-Alver who had an amazingly powerful set of pipes and a whole lotta soul.

Reckless Ambition live up to their name stalking the stage as if they're playing in front of thousands at Download. Full of gusto and confidence, the band perform a lot harder live than what I've seen from their official promo videos.

A non-pretentious outfit who clearly enjoy what they're doing. Leading man Henry Gottelier gives it his all with a respectful smile broadly on his face. His energy combined with that of drummer Ash Powell is what make this band a little special.

Powell is one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen since his namesake Cozy Powell of Rainbow. Although different in style, his bashing of the skins is at times like listening to a World War One rickety machine gun. Think Keith Moon playing Foo Fighters songs and you'll get the idea.

A cover of The Cult's 'She Sells Sanctuary' tells you where their influences lie, but Reckless Ambition really shine with their own material like the hard hitting speed of 'Catch Me If You Can', the melodic 'Hold On Tonight' and set closer 'The Night Is Still Alive'.

A zestful evening of future promise.
