In support of his latest album, 'Welcome 2 My Nightmare', Alice Cooper dubbed his latest UK tour the 'Hallowe'en Night Of Fear', and what better night to witness the great man live onstage but Hallowe'en night itself. Encouraging those attending to dress up for the occasion - an invitation embraced by a large number of the audience - this was probably the best Hallowe'en party in the UK!

Opening with the Vincent Price intro, which segued into 'The Black Widow', with Cooper appearing atop a stage prop in a spider jacket, things were off to a good start. Following this, he aired the 'Brutal Planet' track (from his oft-overlooked 2000 album) before launching into four bona fide Cooper classics in a row: 'I'm Eighteen', 'Under My Wheels', 'Billion Dollar Babies' (with Cooper striding around the stage complete with sword and Alice Cooper dollar bills) and 'No More Mr Nice Guy'.

An audience sing-a-long on 'Hey Stoopid' and 'Feed My Frankenstein' (with Cooper in true mad scientist mode before unveiling his very own monster, Igor), along with lesser known tracks from the 1970s - 'It Is My Body' and 'Killer' - ensured that all fans were catered for tonight. Strange that, although Alice has this new album out at the moment, he chose to play only one track from it, 'I'll Bite Your Face Off', which itself got a good reaction from the crowd.

There were more theatrics to come, of course, with a 'paparazzi photographer' being “attacked” during 'Wicked Young Man' and, of course, it wouldn't be an Alice Cooper show without the guillotine making an appearance and beheading him!.

The show finally ended with a superb rendition of 'School's Out' (including a section from Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall Part 2'), and then it was ticker-tape galore as the gig finished with a rousing rendition of 'Elected'.

Special mention must be made of Cooper's excellent backing band, including stalwart guitarist Steve Hunter and bass player Chuck Garric. But they have now been joined by two new guitarists in the shape of Tommy Henriksen and the extraordinary talents of Orianthi Panagaris (who previously played on the Michael Jackson 'This Is It' film), whose solo segued into 'Cold Ethyl'. There was also the solid backbone of drummer Glen Sobel.

It just goes to show that Cooper's years of performing pretty much guarantee that you're in for a night that you will never forget, with a band of first-class musicians to back him up!

It only takes an hour to fly to Hamburg from London and we've had longer journeys than that within the capital and they were certainly more expensive than the £33 air ticket that just appeared in our 'flights to Wacken Winter Nights' search.

Wacken Winter Nights is organised by the same team who are responsible for the world's greatest Metal festival, Wacken-Open-Air and the 2018 bill includes Skyclad, Orphaned Land, Elvenking, Finntroll, Grave Digger, Aeverium, Comes Vagantes, Coppelius, Corvus Corax, Die Pressgëng, Elvellon, Heimataerde, Hell-O-Matic, Ignis Fatuu, Ingrimm, Irdorath, Johnny Deathshadow, Krayenzeit, Letzte Instanz, Mr Hurley und die Pulveraffen, Pampatut, Pat Razket, Schandmaul, Sündenrausch, The Aberlour's, The Moon And The Nightspirit, Torfrock, Visions Of Atlantis, Vroudenspil, Wind Rose and more.

Besides this rich billing of superb Metal bands, there is so much more to see in the festival area including the medieval market and also the walking acts and jugglers you will meet at the theme worlds, including Robert Blake, three-time World Cup winner of street magic.

Wacken Winter Nights is something not to be missed and you can check out the amazing ticket and accommodation prices right here.

We just priced up the whole four day trip with hotels, flights, shuttles and festival tickets for less than £300 and we don't think you will get a better value festival than that, anywhere.

MetalTalk recently sat down with Wacken founder and owner Thomas Jensen and that interview will be online next week and it's a fascinating insight into how Wacken originated from nothing to become the world's premiere Heavy Metal event.
