'Dark Roots Of Thrash' is a DVD/CD release documenting Bay Area veterans Testament's sold out performance at the Paramount in Huntington on 15th February 2013 as part of their ongoing 'Dark Roots Of Earth' World Tour, which has already seen the band play at venues all over the US and Japan and as well as appearing at a number of European festivals including Wacken, Hard Rock Hell and Bloodstock.

This is a truly fantastic live album which sees the band at the very top of their game and just highlights the fact that Testament are right up there with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth when it comes to producing high quality material.

The band themselves don't let up for a minute during the seventy minute performance - from Chuck Billy's supreme vocals right down to the excellent guitar solos that you expect from the Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson pairing.

Kicking off with 'Rise Up' we're treated to eighteen numbers from throughout their illustrious thirty year career. The earliest numbers performed are 'Over The Wall' and 'Burnt Offerings' from their 1987 debut album 'The Legacy', before bringing the Testament story right up to date with performances of (the aforementioned) 'Rise Up', 'Native Blood', 'True American Hate' and the title track from their most recent album, 'Dark Roots Of Earth'.

As usual with bands that have been around a long time when they produce 'Best Of' or live albums, there are always going to be some omissions because of their great body of work, but one howling omission for me is that there's nothing at all from 1990s 'The Ritual' album (the first Testament album I bought back in the day). Ah well, you still get a whole load of other great tracks to make up for it.

Along with the double CD, there's also the accompanying DVD which was shot on numerous cameras and was produced by the renowned Get Hammered Productions. The DVD was directed by Tommy Jones (who directed the official video for 'River Of Rapture' by Death Angel as well as working with Kataklysm and Soilwork) and the audio tracks were mixed by Juan Urteaga (who has previously worked with the likes of Exodus, Sadus and Machine Head).

The album is available in a vast array of different formats including a standard 2CD versions, a DVD+2CD edition and as a limited edition Blu-ray+2CD and if you add to that a host of other formats which are available exclusively from the Nuclear Blast web shop (shop.nuclearblast.com) and that just leaves you with the tough decision of which version(s) to buy because for any Testament fan worth their salt – this release should definitely be on your shopping list!
