New Band

My best new band of 2014 are Glasgow based quartet Stoneface. Consisting of vocalist Stewart Storrie, guitarist Grant Walsh, Richard Walsh on bass guitar and Kevin Mackie on drums, the band have already performed a handful of gigs in Central Scotland which have gone down a storm, and they are currently preparing their, as yet untitled, debut album for release in early 2015. The band have a solid worth ethic and a great sound that could see them becoming one of the break out bands of the next twelve months.

My band of the year in 2014 are Glasgow quintet, Afterlife. The band's professionalism during their live shows has vocalist Pete McCoy playing the consummate frontman ease whilst lead guitarist Al Reilly puts his guitar through its paces with exquisite solos. The band released their debut ablum, 'Omega', through Off Yer Rocka Recordings in late 2013 and it's full of great tracks like 'Act Of Defiance', 'Way Back Home' and a personal favourite of mine, 'Masters Of Reality'. With the prospect of a new album from them in 2015, Afterlife are a band that I'm looking forward to seeing live again and again.

Scottish Thrashers Disposable released their debut album, 'At The Foot Of The World' earlier this year and what a formidable debut it is too. Nine original Thrash songs are on the album including 'Interlude' and 'Addiction' as well as the fantastic track 'Disposable'. I first encountered the band at a Festival and was blown away by these songs live, but when the album was released in September, it absolutely blew me away with their solid professional sound, and I'm already looking forward to album number two. If you're a Thrash fan then this is an album you should own.

My favourite single of the year was 'No More' by Voodoo Vegas. Culled from the band's debut album, 'The Rise Of Jimmy Silver', the single has a catchy chorus, and it's a sure fire winner in the burgeoning back catalogue of Voodoo Vegas. The twin guitar work from Meryl Hamilton and Nick Brown during the mid-section is a true delight before Brown takes centre stage with the main guitar solo. Having recently supported Status Quo the band's fan base is steadily building so watch this space for more from the band in 2015. You can watch the official lyric video here:

Hard Rock Hell is my gig of the year for a couple of reasons – not the great live sets from Queensryche, Michael Schenker or Krokus but for the highlights for me were the two live sets from Massive Wagons and The Amorettes. These two are a couple of very best that British rock has to offer, and every time these bands play they put on consistent and lively performances. For me, both bands hit new heights with their HRH performances, garnering five out of five for me, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing both bands live again, and the sooner the better too!

Things to look forward to in 2015

2015 for me is looking good for me already with a few gigs planned including Slipknot, the upcoming AC/DC tour and I'm wondering if Status Quo's 'Frantic Four' line up will tour again too. When it comes to albums, the new release from West Lothian based trio The Amorettes is high on my list as is the new album from Thrash Metal giants Slayer – their first ever studio release without founding member Jeff Hanneman. The fourth volume of the book about fictional Reading based band 'Eviscerated Panda' is also on my list and, I'm looking to see what happens to the band next.
