Kaledon are an Italian power Metal band who have been on the go since 1998. Despite numerous line up changes they have kept going long enough to release this, their eighth full length studio album.

These guys are based in Rome and it seems that the historical aspects of their location may have infected their creative process. They love having a concept to base their music on and Kaledon is the name of a fictitious medieval kingdom. All their albums tell stories from the 'history' of that kingdom and this time around it is about how Antillius rose to become the king.

All this sounds very grand and pretentious and maybe to UK eyes and ears a bit silly but when all is said and done what matters is what the music is like and for the most part here it's very good.

Kaledon have a power Metal style with some symphonic influences so what you get is a big melodic Metal sound with lots of power but an epic feel and full of big riffs, double bass drum beats and strong, tuneful vocals.

'The Calm Before The Storm' is all pounding drums and riffing guitars with a keyboard solo to boot while 'Friends Will Be Enemies' is more of the same with that fist in the air sing along feel that works so well in festivals all round Europe.

'Elisabeth' is an epic ballad featuring the guest vocals of Angela Di Vincenzo to add some feminine melodies alongside the more masculine tones of Marco Palazzo and is one of the standout tracks here. It has some competition from the ambitious epic time changes of 'The Angry Vengeance' and the fitting bombast of the concluding track 'The Fallen King'. Overall though the song writing is actually very strong, hanging their work on a central concept seems to work for these guys.

If you are familiar with the dozens of power Metal bands from Europe then you will already have an idea what Kaledon sound like. There is nothing new or groundbreaking here, Kaledon do what they say on the tin so to speak.

Actually a look at the album cover probably tells you what you need to know about their style. However the playing and singing is very, very good, the song writing works well and I found it to be the most enjoyable album in the genre I have heard for quite some time. Well worth checking out if you have any interest at all in the power Metal scene.
