Best New Band

Chuck Garric is best known for his work in Alice Cooper's touring band but his own outfit Beasto Blanco released their debut album this year and it's a cracker. With a style somewhere inbetween Monster Magnet's stoner groove and White Zombie's metallic one the album is an infectious metallic rock and roll fest. Live they added Cooper's daughter Calico to their line up and she brought amazing stage presence to an already excellent live rock and roll experience. I hope this is not just a side project and a band that gets to grow and mature.

Best Band

I have been a fan of Stream Of Passion for a few years now, and I love their unique symphonic female fronted progressive Metal with a latin twist sound and great live performances. 2014 was the year when they took the plunge into the unknown and parted ways with their record company to go it alone. A very successful crowd funding campaign produced a terrific album in 'A War Of Our Own' and their live shows around Europe cemented their reputation as one of the best live bands around. For taking risks in the true spirit of rock and roll this talented band deserve every success going.

Best Album

This is the second album released by Sander Gommans of After Forever fame under the HDK moniker. Teaming up once more with his other half Amanda Somerville and adding the vocal talents of fellow Dutchman Geert Kroes it is a melodic, heavy metal monster of an album. Full of imaginative song writing and great playing and singing there isn't a bad track on it. Due to the busy schedules of Messrs Gommans and Somerville the album release wasn't promoted as well as it might have been and it has gone a little under the radar. I suggest you pick up a copy now as in future years this will be a sought after collectors item.

Best Single

Bristol's Nasty Little Lonely burst onto the scene with their debut EP release 'Son Of The Flies' early in the year. Those four tracks showcased a compelling distorted and menacing vision of how music should be and the industrial power trio took a further step forward with their second EP. Four tracks full of dark and twisted sounds which caress you in one ear while smacking you senseless in the other show that this is a unique band with huge promise and undoubtedly my favourite non-album release this year. You can watch the video for the track 'Bad Jack' here:

Best Gig

It's always a tough choice for me this as I go to a lot of gigs and many are memorable in many ways so it's hard to pick one. I considered shows by Sabaton, Stream Of Passion and The Amorettes among many, but I have decided to cheat and name the Made Of Metal Festival held at Hodonin in the Czech Republic as my gig of the year. Fifty bands over three days with many great performances and a fabulous atmosphere. My ticket cost me 26 Euros and the beer was one euro a pint so fantastic value for money too. European festivals are the way to go!

Things To Look Forward To In 2015

Apart from seeing loads of great gigs and finding new bands, I already know there's a bunch of albums I really, really need to hear. Halestorm are a band on the rise and I expect the follow up to the excellent 'The Strange Case Of' to be something special. I'm also really looking forward to a new non-Metal solo album from Amanda Somerville and the second album from The Amorettes, both albums I've been waiting a long time to hear! There's also The Gentle Storm, a collaboration between Dutch legends Arjen Lucassen and Anneke Van Giersbergen. With tour dates already on sale around Europe I really hope the music lives up to the talent involved.
