skarlett riot

Hailing from North Lincolnshire, hard rock quartet Skarlett Riot were founded back in the summer of 2010 and since then they've been delivering their own brand of solid guitar riff and melody infused songs up and down the UK.

Having shared stages with Taking Dawn, L.A Guns, Glamour Of The Kill, Black Spiders and Deaf Havana and more the band have taken their time to build their fanbase and released their debut album, 'Tear Me Down' in 2013 to great acclaim.

Their new EP, 'We Are The Brave', continues the band ascent and even though it's only five tracks long it really is a fine piece of work and a great snapshot of where the band are now.

From me, the standout track of the EP is also the first one – 'Divide Us' which has a great slow build up from drummer, Luke Oglesby and guitarist Danny Oglesby and you're a good forty seconds in when the main guitar riff finally breaks through.

Having said that, it's nearly seventy seconds before vocalist, Chloe Drinkwater, finally comes in so it shows that this band aren't afraid to play with the formula of a song and when they do it can have outstanding results.

When it settles down, 'Divide Us' is a nice mid-paced number with Drinkwater sounding deliciously evil as she spouts the lyrics like "You're so full of shit, I'm so sick of it" which is swiftly followed up by the defiant chorus. I'd go as far as to say that this could be a future classic for the band.

'Cascade' is another mid-paced number but it still retains a very heavy guitar riff. It actually sounds like Drinkwater lowers her vocal register here which gives the song an overall deeper feel to it but it's a great number. The guitar riff punctuates the choruses before the ubiquitous hands in the air/crowd sing along moment towards the end, which seems perfect for a live gig. As Drinkwater chants "One chance, One chance is all we have" time and again you can imagine the audience punching the air and singing along.

'Wake Up' is a faster paced number with Luke Oglesby laying down a solid drum beat as the guitar riff blasts out. As the vocals come in, the guitar riff takes a back seat while the bass guitar from Martin Shepherd rumbles away in the background. The band have a knack of writing choruses that really do stick in your head – and this track is no exception.

'Rising' has a stop-start guitar intro which sets the pace before the drum sound picks up the mantle with some metronomic drumming. "I'll be back again" sings Drinkwater during the chorus, and without a shadow of a doubt, this band will be back and hopefully they'll be bigger and better than ever.
