  MetalTalk GIG OF THE WEEK
BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR: STAGE TIMES HERE
Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th August 2016

bloodstock

MetalTalk's Gig Of The Week has to be four days of Metal glory in the leafy countryside of Catton Park for the Bloodstock Open Air Festival.

Since its humble beginnings from originally being an indoor festival in Derby back in 2001, Bloodstock has grown into a monster featuring the heaviest of all things Metal. Regularly attracting in the region of 15-18,000 fans you can rest assured that you won't be trekking for hours on end from one stage to the next or getting lost trying to find your tent in the nearby campsite.

The action starts on the Thursday. Get there early and pitch up your tent as there are five bands performing on the Sophie Lancaster Stage including headliner Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons.

If you're confused about the band name, that's because Phil changed it just an hour before they hit the Wacken stage last Thursday night (here). The Motörhead guitarist will be playing some rock classics plus tracks he performed with the loudest band in the world. Phil will also taking the very first drink at the brand new Lemmy's Bar on Thursday night.

Friday is when the action really gets heavy with Twisted Sister bowing out on the Ronnie James Dio Stage with their 'Forty & Fuck It' farewell final UK performance.

It'a a guarantee that motormouth Dee Snider will have a thing or two to say, but when he asks "What do you want to do with your life..?" just make sure you reply: "I Wanna Rock!" at the top of your voice with your fist and beer raised high.

Other highlights on Friday are black Metallers Behemoth performing 'The Satanist' in full, old school black Metal from Venom, stoner rock from Corrosion Of Conformity and crazy antics from Evil Scarecrow.

Diamond Head headline the Sophie Lancaster Stage and check out Beholder who feature the larger than life Simon Hall who works tirelessly finding up and coming talent in the Metal 2 The Masses events up and down the country. You can see the winners on the Hobgoblin Stage throughout the weekend.

Saturday features the progressive weighty dynamics of Mastodon, French Metal from Gojira, goth doom from Paradise Lost, technical industrial Metal from Fear Factory and Acid Reign will please old thrashers on the Sophie Lancaster Stage.

For those whose ears haven't already bled, Sunday rounds off with the kings of thrash, Slayer and Anthrax with Symphony X, DragonForce and Satyricon also delivering the goods.

You can find all of the stage times at the bottom of this page.

One of the things that sets Bloodstock apart from other events is festival founder, Paul Raymond Gregory's on-site RAM Gallery. This year, Paul has paid tribute to Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister with a stunning new portrait exhibited in a custom, hand-carved frame, as well as other choice installations from his world-renowned portfolio of work.

...and we paint rock n' roll...

Regular RAM Gallery contributor and luthier Cynosure, creator of hand-made guitars as art, will be exhibiting two new instruments also inspired by Lemmy. Other artists also exhibiting work are Orange County artist, Christian Sloan Hall, who has created work for Amon Amarth and Testament, plus abstract artist and Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier who has contributed two original paintings.

Also expect to view featured art-focussed books from Lariyah Hayes (Darkadya: The Book Of Art From Below) and Ramon Martos (And Justice For Art, revised edition), plus rock-themed photography from Peter Nahum and Alison Richards.

When the Metal finishes in the Hobgoblin New Blood tent each evening, a different set of howls take centre stage with Bloodstock's comedy bill. Friday's gag-filled line-up includes David Jordan's edgy songs and stand-up, Chris Brooker's hilarious improvisation, the award-winning newcomer Ingrid Dahle, all compere'd by everyone's favourite Heavy Metal comedian, Andrew O'Neill.

Saturday evening's bill features compere and all-round funny man Jim Smallman, plus laffs-a-plenty from Jonathan Mayor and Perrier comedy Award-winner Wil Hodgson. Sunday ushers in a full 'History Of Heavy Metal' set from Andrew O'Neill, combining stand-up comedy with live music played on his customised Flying V guitar. Andrew will be supported by thrash Metal beasts, Reprisal.

Over on the Sophie Lancaster stage, once the bands have finished for the night, the DJ squad steps in to take you through until 2.00am. Expect a guest slot on the decks from Evil Scarecrow's ringmaster Monty Blitzfist and Kraven Morrdeth on Friday, the DJs from London's VooDoo Rocks on Saturday and Total Rock's Anna Dumpe on Sunday, plus BOA's resident 4 DJ's Of The Apocalypse doing their regular 12 Midnight-2.00am slot.

Bloodstock looks set to be another terrific year. A festival that the UK can be proud of. Be there \_/
