MARK TAYLOR'S BIG CITY NIGHTS
JOE BONAMASSA BOWS TO THE THREE KINGS LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE
Joe Bonamassa: 'Live At The Greek Theatre'
(Provogue - Mascot Label Group) CD/DVD/ Blue-Ray/3LP Vinyl
The artwork has Joe Bonamassa standing tall with his custom Flying V looking like a Marvel comic book hero. While the blues star is certainly no comic, he is indeed a hero to his legions of fans who worship everything the young American blues guitarist does, from his own material and bringing back to life old standards for a new generation to appreciate and to be inspired.
This year Joe Bonamassa wowed audiences with his homage to the UK guitarists Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton with his own adaptions of some of their more obscure and lesser known tracks.
'Live At The Greek Theatre' sees Bonamassa paying tribute to The Three Kings, aka Freddie King, Albert King and the recently departed BB King.
Joe was brought up on the blues and even supported BB King when he was just twelve years old.
"My only regret is that BB was not alive to see it," he says of this Greek Theatre performance. The same can be said for both Freddie and Albert King who passed away in 1976 and 1992 respectively.
The Greek Theatre is a lavish outdoor venue in Los Angeles. Filmed on a warm summer's evening on 29th August last year, over 5,500 fans watched this stunning performance, captured on this DVD by multiple camera angles.
With the show split into three, Bonamassa first pays tribute to Freddie King with some 'Lonesome Whistle Blues' and the spine tingling 'You've Got To Love Her With A Feeling' being amongst the highlights.
Bonamassa is on his finest form throughout, as are his band which features the tight and powerful drumming of Anton Fig and the soaring Hammond work of Reese Wynans. What sets this out from previous live recordings is the addition of three female backing singers who really add some soul and life to these magical numbers.
Joe really lets rip on Albert King's 'Breaking Up Somebody's Home' and gets gritty on 'I Get Evil' and 'Angel Of Mercy'.
Guitar purists will take pleasure in seeing Bonamassa make full use of his collection of guitars which includes his custom Flying V plus his vintage Gibson ES models and Fender Strats.
Things get jazzier for the BB King material where he lets the good times roll with a delightful 'Hummingbird'.
With encores being tributes to all The Three Kings with standing ovations for 'Hide Away', the ballsy 'Born Under A Bad Sign' and BB's 'The Thrill Has Gone'.
Amazingly this is Joe Bonamassa's thirteenth live album and ranks amongst his best work to date.
The King's are dead, love live the King.
