THERE'S HEAVY METAL HISTORY IN 'LIVE AT WACKEN 2015 - 26 YEARS LOUDER THAN HELL'

wacken 2015

"Louder Than Hell!" – that’s the slogan for Wacken Open Air, possibly the greatest Heavy Metal festival in the world. Just as Donington Park is the spiritual home of Metal in UK, the same can be said in Germany of Wacken.

Located in the village of Wacken in the beautiful countryside of Schleswig-Holstein, the northern most of the sixteen German states of Germany, seventy five thousand Metalheads from all over the world descend there for three days every year to celebrate their music.

More than one hundred and twenty bands perform each year over eight stages and the venue has seen many legendary performances over the years from Black Sabbath, the Dio-fronted Heaven And Hell, Rammstein, Saxon, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, Slayer, The Scorpions and many, many more although strangely enough Metallica have never played there.

It was earlier this month at Wacken that Iron Maiden wrapped up their 2016 Book Of Souls World Tour with a live broadcast to an estimated twenty seven million people worldwide. In case you missed our coverage, you can read all about this landmark performance right here.

2015 was packed with big names, of course, including headline performances from Trans Siberian Orchestra and Savatage in a performance that made Heavy Metal history as the two bands played simultaneous performances over both Main Stages. You can see how that spectacular night wentright here.

In Flames, Rob Zombie, Europe, Biohazard, Within Temptation also played and British Metal legends Judas Priest topped the bill on the Saturday night. Priests full live set was documented in the 'Battle Cry' CD and DVD package released earlier this year. It was another unforgettable performance from the Metal Gods as you can see right here.

The ‘Live At Wacken 2015’ package brings together a variety of performances from throughout the weekend from Priest, Armored Saint, Cradle Of Filth, Annihilator, Death Angel, Sabaton along with Danko Jones, Europe and The Answer to bring you the feel of the festival and an idea of why this incredible event sells out every single year. Kicking off with Priest's closing number 'Painkiller', it's obvious the band and the audience are thoroughly enjoying the moment.

Other highlights include a great performance from Annihilator and their classic 'Alison Hell', 'Buried Alive' by Death Angel and a duo of songs from Cradle of Filth and Cannibal Corpse respectively showing that extreme Metal has just as much right to be on the Wacken stage as the classic tunes of Europe and Danko Jones.

The production throughout the album is fantastic for each performance and you can tell it's one hundred percent live too as the performances aren't always perfect with the odd mistimed solo or struggling vocal performance included showing that this live album is very much as it was on the day. The crowd are also heard loud and clear too, because we've all heard live albums that might as well have been recorded in the studio as the audience is barely audible.

All genres of rock and Metal are included here with a lean towards the heavier bands – you have to feel sorry for The Answer who seem out of sorts in their placing between the Heavy Metal tones of Godsized and My Dying Bride on the second disc, but hey, at least they’re on the album!

Of course, joining the CD is the DVD which is a multi-camera set up which is stunning. Containing more tracks than the CDs, the DVD allows the viewer to really get to the heart of the festival and see the performances up close whilst, for those who were there, it's a time capsule to possibly one of the greatest weekends of their lives.

Wacken Open Air proudly boasts that it's a "festival by fans for fans" and the fact it sells out year after year, usually before any acts have been announced, is testament to their pulling power for fans and artists alike. A place on the Wacken bill is something to be proud of and to be included in this compilation of 2015 highlights is surely the icing on the cake for any artist.
