Following their hugely successful two part concept album, 'Vertikal, I and II', Atmospheric Progressive Metal septet from Umeå, Sweden, Cult of Luna have been taking a breather, but not before recording one more track for a split release with Swedish Post Metal/ Doom project 'The Old Wind', masterminded by Tomas Liljedahl (Breach and ex The Ocean).

The title of the EP, 'Råångest', means "raw anxiety" in Swedish and the artwork, by LA-based German artist Florian Bertmer expresses perfectly this state of mind... the sheer walls of a well, from the perspective of someone trapped at the bottom of it.

Consisting of three tracks, the first, by Cult of Luna is 'Last Will and Testament' an Amebix cover, from the Crust Punk /Thrashers 1987 classic album, 'Monolith'.

It's given the "Cult of Luna" treatment so it's longer and like everything by the band, is an exercise in progressive perfection. It's more haunting, reflective and darker to open, the hard vocal delivery is still there, as is the dirty edge to the riffs, but there's an added flow.

This addition is the progressive element, still maintaining that essential essence and holding true to the original yet adds a unique slant and making it an excellent interpretation.

The other two tracks are by The Old Wind, who are currently working on a follow up to their 2013 album 'Feast On Your Gone', and offer an insight as to just how that album will manifest.

The tracks 'Wooden Scythe' and 'Daughters of Cleanse' are sombre and hypnotic, doom laden but still have that punchy quality, with exacting rhythms from pummelling drum work, tortuous, abrasive vocals and dirtily riffing all delivered with a cold rawness that warms the heart.

It's a harder sound than Cult of Luna but the two bands styles are not dissimilar and certainly complement each other.

The sum of the parts together make a superb overall listen. Cult of Luna fans will love this and anyone with a penchant for a touch of Doom should find it an intriguing listen also.

This EP is part 2 of the Pelagic Split Series, a new series of split EPs, with two bands sharing the two sides of a vinyl record.

'Råångest' comes in CD digipak or 12" vinyl EP format (45 RPM), in various colour-in-colour vinyl styles. The limited colour-in-colour vinyls are pre order only and the EP is released on 29th January 2016.
