||ALLEN LANIER OF BLUE OYSTER CULT PASSES AWAY AGED 66
14th August 2013
Former Blue Oyster Cult keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Allen Lanier has passed away aged 66. He died after suffering from C.O.P.D. which causes breathing problems brought on by years of heavy smoking.
Allen Lanier is an original member having been with the band in their early incarnation when they were known as the Soft White Underbelly. He played on all Blue Oyster Cult studio albums from the eponymous debut album from 1972 right up to 'Curse Of The Hidden Mirror' from 2001, except for 85s 'Club Ninja'.
Lanier, who once dated Patti Smith at the height of their fame, was a versatile player switching from the keys to guitar with ease. He had writing credits for some of Blue Oyster Cult's most loved album cuts including 'True Confessions' and 'Tenderloin', both from the mega selling 'Agents Of Fortune' album, and 'Searchin For Celine', 'Lonely Teardrops' and 'In Thee'.

The addition of the umlaut to the band's name and logo was suggested by Allen Lanier, a theme that would be later copied by other bands who would also use umlauts in their name such as Motorhead, Motley Crue, Queensryche and even Spinal Tap.
Eric Bloom stated today: "My great friend Allen Lanier has passed. I'll miss the guy even though we hadn't spoken in awhile. He was so talented as a musician and a thinker. He read voraciously, all kinds of things, especially comparative religion. We drove for years together, shared rooms in the early days. We partied, laughed, played. All BOC fans and band members will mourn his death.
"Ultimately smoking finally got to him. He had been hospitalized with C.O.P.D.
"It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years worth. Maybe he's playing a tune with Jim Carroll right now."
Lanier left the band officially in 2007. He played his last shows with the band in 2006 leaving after a few dates due to illness. He re-united with Blue Oyster Cult for a special 40th anniversary show in New York last year.
