Archive: 2016 – Motörhead’s Mikkey Dee Announced As Scorpions Drummer

Archive: 28th April 2016. Remember recently when Motörhead’s Mikkey Dee was announced as Thin Lizzy drummer for their run of anniversary gigs during 2016 and 2017?

The fact Lizzy were playing again was exciting enough, even though Black Star Riders have provided excellent albums and superb live shows since they changed their name, but Mikkey Dee as drummer made this even more special.

However, earlier this month it was announced that Judas Priest’s Scott Travis was to be Lizzy drummer for their scheduled gigs which include Ramblin’ Man Festival in England and Rock Legends V Cruise.

Mikkey said when Scott was announced as drummer in his place: “Unfortunately, due to circumstances that will be announced very soon, I cannot play the six shows with Thin Lizzy in 2016 and 2017. As a life long fan of the band, I truly wish I could have been a part of this, but the reason will be revealed as soon as possible. I wish my great friends Scott Travis and Ian Haugland all the best with these shows and I know they will kick ass!”

The reason is because Mikkey has joined the Scorpions (at least temporarily) instead. Today the Scorpions officially made the following announcement:

“Scorpions will hit the road in May for twelve North American headlining dates with Mikkey Dee, formerly of Motörhead, sitting in on drums for James Kottak, announced today. Kottak is currently on break while he seeks medical attention. Swedish-born Mikkey Dee joined Motörhead in 1992 and is well-respected among the rock and metal community.

Scorpions singer Klaus Meine states ‘We would like to continue our Return to Forever tour with James, but we have to realize that his health is priority. We wish James a speedy recovery and he will be back to Rock with us very soon! We look forward to seeing all our fans this month.’

Hella Rock Festival

“Scorpions kick off the 2016 U.S. leg with twelve dates in May beginning at Carolina Rebellion in Charlotte, NC on May 6th and includes a Las Vegas residency.”

James Kottak is currently on break while he seeks medical attention and we wish him all the very best.

Mikkey was Motörhead drummer for twenty-four years and played on thirteen of the greatest rock n’ roll band in history’s twenty-two classic studio albums.
