7th August 2016

German Metal festivals are still in full swing at 3.00am while here in Blighty we are normally being hussled out of the arenas long before midnight.

However, our now politically-detached neighbours have to wrap up their festivals by Sunday due to some antiquated religious law that says if you work on a Sabbath you get cast into the pits of Hell where you will burn forever in fiery damnation or some similar load of old cobblers so to remedy this Arch Enemy, Triptykon and Clutch all put on devilishly good shows on Saturday to close out Wacken 2016.

Arch Enemy unveiled their largest stage production to date for last night's performance and it was the pinnacle of a highly successful 'War Eternal' campaign with new frontlady Alissa White-Gluz proving beyond doubt that she is more than worthy of stepping into Angela Gosow's boots.

Triptykon took to the stage at dusk and produced a dark, brooding and in places sinisterly provoking set. Thomas Gabriel Fischer, known in his Celtic Frost days as Tom G Warrior, showed just why he is a pioneer of death/black Metal, as you can see in this video here.

The highlight of the whole set was the appearance of the mesmerising Simone Vollenweider who positively radiated throughout her time onstage. Have a watch of 'Obscured' and you'll see exactly what we mean.

Clutch lightened the mood with a hard rockin' set of powerful numbers including newly released single 'A Quick Death In Texas' with frontman Neil Fallon being every bit the entertainer he always is.

But again, no need to take our word for it as here's the full concert, courtesy of Wacken TV.

But the night belonged to Arch Enemy who really showed why they had top billing with a career-best performance. Not many bands could replace an iconic frontlady like Angela but Arch Enemy have pulled it off with aplomb.

Just take a watch of this as last night saw one of Wacken's classic performances.
