ARCHIVE: Metallica Hardwire Central Park With Cat Stevens

First Published: 26 September 2016. Metallica played a blistering shortened set in New York’s Central Park on Saturday night as a major part of the free Global Citizen event, along with a diverse cast of artists including Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens.

Global Citizen is an organisation dedicated to tackling common issues in the world today and their ‘catchphrases’ include “Healthy people are able to live fuller, happier lives”, “Ending extreme poverty needs innovative ideas, good governance and sustainable financing, “Well-fed people create stable communities, perform better in school and take advantage of the opportunities to end extreme poverty”.

Anyone with a social conscience would do well to check them out and get behind what they are doing and you can do that right here.

A fit, healthy and fired up looking James Hetfield introduced ‘One’ with the words: “Metallica is grateful to be a part of the solution, not the problem. This song goes out to those people who are like-minded and whose good intentions hopefully meet their intended destinies,” during a stunning five song set, totally made up of tracks from the early part of their career, as follows.

James, Lars, Kirk and Robert said, just after they came off stage: “We just walked off the stage at the Global Citizen show in New York’s Central Park and we had such a blast that we’re going to keep the good vibes rolling by adding another show to our New York run!

“This Tuesday, September 27th, we’ll be playing a special show for our Fifth Members only at the intimate Webster Hall and if you’re a member you have a chance to pick up tickets and join us.”

You’ll find more details about this on Metallica’s official website.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder delivered a passionate speech about the current state of global affairs and big-name Hollywood stars including co-host Priyanka Chopra, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ star Neil Patrick Harris, Chime For Change co-founder and actress Salma Hayek and First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, on video, also made appearances.

Eddie Vedder also appeared during a very special set by Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, who played his first shows in New York in forty years last week. Yusuf played his 1971 smash hit ‘Wild World’ and the Pearl Jam vocalist sang ‘Father And Son’ in a stirring moment of the event.

During his set, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Yusuf said: “Hopefully these kind of movements will help us to be a bit more sensitive to others and what it feels like to be humans and to share. Because this world is big enough to share and for it to go round.”

He then finished his performance with the timely 1971 song ‘Peace Train’ which everyone should go and listen to right now. They don’t make many like this any more…

After Metallica’s performance, a clearly enthused Lars Ulrich said: “I love my sons. I want them to inherit the Earth. We keep waiting for future generations to solve the problems. I want lawmakers and laws to impose change. Nothing else will keep this world safe for my sons.

“The [Global Citizen] festival has been on our radar for a few years. I was watching [Stephen] Colbert last year and Hugh Evans [co-founder of Global Poverty Project] came out. I was super-impressed at how passionate and personable he is. Not to rank do-gooders, but sometimes you wonder if there’s an ulterior motive. But he has an earnestness that is very infectious. And there’s a politically neutral tone to what he does.”

Metallica’s tenth studio album, ‘Hardwired… To Self-Destruct’, is released on November 18th via the band’s own label, Blackened Recordings. Metallica will play at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View, California on October 22nd and October 23rd.

Everybody at MetalTalk is seriously looking forward to seeing Metallica at a major UK festival in 2017.
