Biff: "It's great to see Eddie playing again..."

1st November 2016

Saxon, Fastway and Girlschool are in Dublin tonight for the fourth date of the headliners' Battering Ram World Tour UK/Ireland leg and Fast Eddie Clarke joined Saxon on stage at Newcastle and Glasgow for a very special rendition of 'Ace Of Spades'.

It was a three-pronged guitar attack on the Motörhead classic as all five members of Saxon remained on stage and the packed out crowd absolutely lapped it up, as you can see on the videos below.

And the band played on...

We spoke to Biff just before soundcheck in Dublin this evening and he told us how the tour was going up to now.

"Well we've only done three shows so far but yes, it's been really good. Glasgow was sold out four or five weeks ago and that was cool but they've all been good. Newcastle was great and so was Belfast. They've all been good so far and a lot of people have come to see us so that's great."

The pleasure is to play...

Fast Eddie joining Saxon for 'Ace Of Spades' marks the first time the former Motörhead axeman has played the classic track since he guested with Bastards, headed by Oimel Larcher from Nitrogods, at Metal Forever Festival in Böblingen in February 2005 and on whether these performances were pre-planned or spontaneous, Biff told us:

"A bit of both really. At first we didn't think we should do it and it's not necessarily going to be every night. If he's got time and he hasn't left the building and there's time to play it, we'll do it. When we are sound checking together we talk about it and decide it on the day."

Heavy Metal thunder...

Motörhead's Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee joined Biff and Saxon bass player Nibs Carter on stage at the Golden Gods at Hammersmith Odeon on 15th June and at Sweden's Ljungbyhed Park in September at the Lemmy 500 and we asked Biff if doing 'Ace Of Spades' with Eddie is a different vibe to those occasions?

"It's a very different vibe because all of Saxon are on the stage at the same time when Eddie joins us, so it's a totally different situation really, completely unlike with Phil and Mikkey. It's great to see Eddie playing again."

Fast Eddie received raptuorus receptions from the Newcastle and Glasgow crowds, as you can see from the videos below and Biff introduced Eddie at Newcastle with: "This guy wrote this song with Lemmy and Philthy!"

At Glasgow, while Eddie was strapping on his famous gold Stratocaster, Biff joked: "Not too loud Eddie, not too loud," whilst at the end of the Glasgow rendition, Biff remarked: "I don't know how we're going to follow that."

A treat, not a trick...

Girlschool appear to be behaving themselves on tour as well and Biff told us:

"They're playing great actually. It's great to see them back in action and they're doing really well."

Demolition girls...

Here's the earlier mentioned videos of Fast Eddie with Saxon playing 'Ace Of Spades'. They're both fan filmed videos so not the greatest quality but they are still both highly enjoyable. The first one is from Newcastle and the second is from Glasgow.

We'll be at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire on Saturday night for what is bound to be a momentous occasion so look out for our full lowdown on a Bonfire Night that is sure to go with a bang.
