Y&T FANS HURT STRAIGHT THRU THE HEART AS JOEY ALVES PASSES AWAY
Johnny Main
14th March 2017

Original Y&T guitarist Joey Alves has died at the age of 63 from ulcerative colitis and other health complications.

Y&T mainman Dave Meniketti wrote on his official Facebook page:

"It's with great sadness that I write this today. Y&T's original rhythm guitarist, Joey Alves, passed away at 7:10 this morning (Sunday 12th March) at the age of 63. He suffered from ulcerative colitis and other complications that led to his passing.

"Joey was one of the finest rock rhythm guitarists, and I'll always remember playing next to him chunking out those monster chords with his classic red double cutaway '59 Les Paul Jr. As Ronnie Montrose once said about Joey, 'There are rhythm players, then there's Joey'. A class of his own. He was a fun guy who always played with attitude and conviction, and was responsible for writing some memorable riffs for Y&T over the years. His friendship and presence will be missed.

"This is a great loss for all the Y&T family and faithful. He now joins Phil Kennemore and Leonard Haze (bass guitar and drums, who died in 2011 and 2016 respectively) in rock and roll heaven."

Alves had originally joined the group in 1974 and served as guitarist until he left in 1989 after appearing on eight Y&T albums. After leaving the group he kept in touch with the band, temporarily returning in 2014 and again in 2016 when he undertook some live dates with the band.

Late yesterday, Meniketti again took to his official Facebook to share a clip of Alves from an upcoming documentary, 'On With The Show' which is due for release in late-2017, saying:

"I saw this clip of Joey two days ago when I was reviewing part of the documentary. Seeing Joey on the screen while knowing he was not long for this earth was a shock to me at first, but hearing what he said in this clip really touched me. What he said is so right and I wanted to share this with deep respect for my friend."

MONSTERS OF ROCK IN FULL FLIGHT SURE TO BECOME FUTURE COLLECTOR'S ITEM

monsters of rock

Monsters Of Rock In Full Flight is stricylt limited to 300 worldwide and is available from 30th November but those ordering before 31st October will have their name published within a dedicated page in the book.

It's a deluxe 128 page hardback book in a metal flight case with a narrative by Jerry Bloom.

When promoter Paul Loasby put on the first Monsters Of Rock Festival in 1980 he could probably never have imagined it would become an annual event that would endure for so many years.

Featuring bands from the UK, Germany, Canada and USA, Loasby chose to stage the event at the Donington race circuit in the middle of England and it would prove to be a defining moment for many of the bands on the bill.

Not least for headliners Rainbow as it was the their last ever show to feature drum legend Cozy Powell. As it would happen it turned out to be the last for vocalist Graham Bonnet as well. For many of the other bands on the bill such as Scorpions, Judas Priest and Saxon, they were all on the ascendancy and would soon go on to even greater success.

Now in celebration of this first ever Monsters Of Rock Festival comes this hardback book full of glorious photos of the bands that took to the stage for that inaugural event including back stage shots. Most of these shots have not been published before which add to the uniqueness of this deluxe 128-page book which is packaged in its own flight case.

Also included are stories surrounding the event with tales and recollections from those who were there, including artists and fans alike. Each book will be signed by the author. The 300 will sell fast and definitely go on to become collector's items so order yours now right here to avoid disappointment.
