Skunk Anansie Return with An Artist Is An Artist

Iconic British rock band Skunk Anansie have electrified fans with their brand-new single, An Artist Is An Artist, their first new music in nearly three years. With the legendary quartet operating at full throttle, the new song is witty and provocative, bringing spiky new-wave vibes alongside their signature edge.

The track confronts themes of ageism and our digital age’s obsession with validation. There is certainly a fiery tone that brings back confrontational memories of the band’s explosive 1994 debut single, Little Baby Swastikkka.

Produced by David Sitek, renowned for his work with Foals, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Solange, the song strips back to the band’s primal essence while introducing unexpected elements, such as a standout saxophone solo.

Despite Skin’s initial hesitation toward the instrument, the collaboration yielded a sound that feels both natural and revolutionary. “My mantra became, just trust The Dave,” Skin quipped about the experience.

“He basically reminded us that the process of making music didn’t need to be that complicated,” guitarist Ace told us. “When you start a band, it never is. So it was a good reminder of that, and he got us to strip things right down.”

An Artist Is An Artist might be a surprising first taste of expectations for 2025, but Skunk Anansie are reinvigorated after a period of introspection, and their work with Sitek has seen the band step out of their comfort zone.

It does look to be a good match. “His name seemed to be on a lot of records that we liked,” Skin said, “but none of the records sounded the same. The records all sounded fresh, but mainly the artists all sounded like themselves.”

During the writing and recording process, An Artist Is An Artist was developed with a trademark, hulking Skunk riff. Sitek reduced the song to its most primal essence, then decided they needed a saxophone. “I fucking hate sax,” Skin said. “Then this really cool fucking dude walks in and played sax like I’ve never heard it before.”

The lyric video accompanying An Artist Is An Artist highlights the band’s energy and relevance, proving that after three decades and millions of albums sold, they remain as vital as ever.

The song sets the stage for their highly anticipated European and UK headline tour, kicking off in Porto, Portugal, on 28 February 2025. With sold-out shows in major cities like Milan, Berlin, and London, this tour promises to be a celebration of Skunk Anansie’s storied career.
